HOORAY FOR EARTH and A-PLUS

Hooray for Earth get an A for their persistence. They’ve made every effort to get this blogger’s attention. In fact, you might say they’re relentless. Yeah. That’s how I’d described their self-titled debut, as a matter of fact. Pop music that is driven by drums. In every song, it’s the drums that rise to the top of the mix and dominate the combination of growling synth and guitar. Under all that are the vocals, which seem secondary. Even “Magazines,” the record’s rare slow number (and one of it’s best tracks), is characterized by the beat.

A PLUS- My Last Good Deed

If you don’t already know, A Plus, a.k.a. “Plee,” was a founder of indie rap bands Souls of Mischief and The Hieroglyphics. He’s dropping a solo album, My Last Good Deed, this summer, and the platter promises appearances from both of his former bands, among others. I admit, lots of underground rap is pretty lame: Lots of yelling or lots of long words and heavy thoughts without much flow, and way too much anger without nearly enough wit. Plee is different, though, which is why he can get guys like Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, J-Zone, Sunspot Jonz, Masta Ace, etc., to team up with him on beats and tours.
