Oslo’s Simon Says No! bills itself as part My Bloody Valentine and part Slowdive, but their EP is a most schizophrenic affair. The lead track, “Ahoi de Angst” is screaming punk, short, sharp and shocking. But the next track, “Shiver,” is more like anthem emo, with a chorus that hits at shoegaze. They break that barrier completely on the six-minute “Peak,” which wanders through soaring vocals and crashing cymbals. Squeezed in before that is the single, “Sleeping Heart,” a fairly straight-ahead pop song with a marching beat. In other words, this is less of an EP than a showcase, revealing the band’s versatility and skill. It certainly piques interest for a future release, if for no other reason than to find out what they’ll do next.
