LEMONWILDE-“Red Room” (EP)

Posted on April 6th, 2009 by ekko

Lemonwilde compare themselves to Radiohead, but I’m hearing a much more improvisational, almost jazzy vibe here. Something closer to The Diggs. You know, the kind of moody indie rock that has a vague sense of menace and evokes a feeling that anything can happen—but probably won’t. It’s a lot like the sound of the Buffy The Vampire T.V. Series’ soundtrack album (which featured a great cover of “Wild Horses,” by the way), which might be why they recently asked to play a party for Sarah Michelle Gellar. The opening cut, “Just This Ashtray,” is a dramatic effort, laden with emotion and vocals with the weight of Robbie Robertson. Other songs are jazzy and offer more instrumental improvisation, allowing the band to stretch out and fill the space.
This is good stuff, and if you want the whole EP, signed by the band, be one of the first three people to send me an e-mail with your address and “Lemonwilde EP” as the subject line.  You won’t be sorry you did it!

The rest of you can stream their newest EP, “Red Room,” at their Myspace page.  Leave a comment to tell them you heard about it here, so that when they get famous (and they very well might) they’ll owe Berkeley Place a debt of gratitude.

COMMON MARKET-“The Winter’s End” (EP)

Posted on April 6th, 2009 by ekko

How many rappers are influenced by John Cougar Mellencamp? Although he’s played with Chuck D. and Michelle N’Degeocello, farmboy Johnny C. isn’t part of most hip hoppers record collection. Yet the first lyrics of Common Market’s new EP are a quote from Mellencamp’s “Rain on the Scarecrow.” Nouveau Depart is a short, bare-bones track, and it’s the best cut on this impressive record. It’s the best because its simplicity allows RA Scion to showcase his skills without distraction. Another great track is “Slow Down Moses,” in which RA reveals his pain over his father’s suicide using a flow that’s slightly behind the beat.

Featuring serious topics, excellent production, and bilingual skills, RA is one to watch this year. He’s been kicking around for a little while, and this may be his time in the spot.

Remixes aren’t usually my bag, but this one’s kinda neat.

Okay, so they’ve done zombie Pride and Prejudice.  Can zombie Family Matters be far behind?

Part One is here!

Part Two is here!

Part Three is here!

This is the end my friends, the end.

  • Rock N Roll-John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, Taylor Hawkins on vocals, Dave Grohl on Drums (Led Zep).  (YSI)

S is for

T is for

  • Times Like These-Ryan Adams (Foo Fighters)

U is for

  • The Best of “U”-Stereophonics (Foo Fighters).

V is for

  • (Moist) Vagina-Nirvana.  This is actually “Marijuana,” but I guess tagging it like this is a Nirvana fan’s idea of a witty joke.  Dig the 45 second burp at the end.

Part One is here!

Part Two is here!

Part three is below!

L is for

  • Breed-Local H (Nirvana). Actually, if you follow this link you can find an entire Local H show where they do only Nirvana tunes.  It’s pretty good, but it’s in flac format so make sure you’ve got a translation program.
  • Love Buzz.  Nirvana had two singles-only released for Sub Pop in 1988, and this was the (far) better of the two. (YSI)
  • Lithium-The Polyphonic Spree (Nirvana). (YSI)
  • Territorial Pissings-The Liars (Nirvana)

M is for

  • Mash up #1: Alpha Mend (Prosac’s Mash-up) Vs Röyksopp.  A Foo Fighters mash up.  I don’t hear a lot of these, and I rarely them as good as this one.
  • Mash up #2: Hurt’s Like Teen Spirit.  A pretty (deservedly) well-known mash of Nirvana, Blue Oyster Cult, and The Man in Black.  If you’ve never heard it, you should.  If you have, you know what you’re missing by not copping it today.
  • Mash up #3: Smells Like Booty-Destiny’s Child vs Nirvana

N is for

  • Nirvana.  Here’s “Smell’s Like Teen Spirit,” live in 1992, in a razor sharp, tough-as-nails rendition.
  • Smells Like Teen Spirit (nirvana)-Willie Nelson.  Yes, that Willie Nelson.  You gotta hear this.

O is for

P is for

  • Something In The Way (Nirvana Cover)-Port O’Brien.
  • My Hero-Paramore (Foo Fighters).  Very poppy, but nice enough.
  • Smells Like Teen Spirit-Painting Tasters with Rockin Reelers.  I’m not sure where I found this (some weird blog) but it sure be strange.
  • Pavement’s cover of Lithium (Nirvana cover).

Q is for

  • Quiet!  I don’t have any Q covers, rarities or anything.  It’s one of the hardest letters to do in an A to Z.  Come back tomorrow.

The rumored Kanye West/Karen O project leaked today.  Supposedly, it will be released on the charity album “No Nose Job” to benefit stage actors in N.Y.C.  Strange track, but I like what they did with the lyrics.

We’re Not Gonna Take It (Twisted Sister cover)-Yeah Yeah Yeahs produced by Kanye West (YSI)
