THE TOP 40 T.V. THEMES EVER–#39: M*A*S*H

39.  M*A*S*H. This would have rated higher as a T.V. theme if they’d used the lyrics to “Suicide is Painless,” as they did in the movie.  Such a powerful song, truly.  But even without the lyrics, the well-constructed, humorless instrumental was revolutionary because it departed from every sit-com theme that had ever preceded it.  It wasn’t dopey, didn’t tell a story, didn’t try to be cute or ingratiating.  This list is about music, not images, but coupled with the sequence (helicopter dropping off wounded), it let you know that you weren’t in for your average T.V. show.
