J. PERIOD AND K’NAAN-”The Messengers” (Digi EP)

Posted on August 23rd, 2009 by ekko

J. Period is one of the best mixtape producers you’ve never heard of, the mastermind behind the classic Best of Lauryn Hill mixtape, and now half of the duo responsible for “Messengers” a so-called tribute to three masters of music–Bob, Bob, and Fela.  The songs are billed as “remixes” but they are way more than that.  More like reimaginations.  And best of all, it’s a free digital release to help promote Somalian K’Naan’s sophomore album, Troubadour.  There’s supposedly going to be a full album, too, but the three-song EP is available for free download here.

1. Let’s Start (Fela Kuti Tribute)
2. Belly Full (Bob Marley Tribute) f. Kardinal Offishall, General Steele (Smif’N’Wessun) & Baja (Dry Eye Crew)
3. Relationships Lay (Bob Dylan Tribute)

Other J. Period . . .

Buggin’ Out (Tribe Called Quest cover)-Consequence and Kid Cudi (2 versions; direct download .zip file)

  1. sweet bob mash-up

  2. “Let’s Start” has been my favorite Fela tune ever since I first heard it. It was exciting to hear J.Period’s version. I liked J.Period’s “QTip for President” too.

  4. Dude, just follow the link and get the whole thing.

  5. If there is anyone you should be blogging about is Nneka – she’s a new artist from Nigeria that traveled to Germany to study and sing. She’s really good, has a real unique sound and a genuine artist not like a lot around right now.
