Yes, it’s “wrong” because it’s vandalism.  And it’s childish.  But it’s still funny.  When I was a kid, we had a textbook, “Man on the Earth” that we all altered to say, “Man on the Fart.”  Very funny in 4th Grade.

PETER WOLF CRIER-Inter-Be

Posted on May 15th, 2010 by ekko

Question of the day: Why did it take me two full listens before I could say without a doubt that I enjoyed Peter Wolf Crier‘s “Inter-Be”?  Follow up: Why did it take me two and half listens before I learned that I not just enjoyed it, but I flat out love it?

The answer isn’t easy.  Few submissions get more than about fifteen minutes to convince me to listen straight through, and of those, about half actually get a write up.  I was willing to give Peter Wolf Crier two second chances because they are on Jagjaguwar, one of my all-time favorite labels, and because although the songs seemed familiar on first listen, there was still something different about them.  I thought at first that they were just slightly off.  But I couldn’t bring myself to hit “skip track.”

Inter-Be is the Peter Wolf Crier’s debut, which is actually the project of Minneapolis-based duo of Peter Pisano and Brian Moen. It’s a bluesy, mostly acoustic collection of songs that sound so raw that they almost seem unfinished.  It’s their lo-fi nature that makes the band a little hard to hear at first.  Take “Down Down Down” for example: The guitar is out of sync with the percussion, and the vocals are harmonized, taking their cue from a heavy thumping in the background and seemingly ignorant of the guitar.  The song pushes forward, like Jesus dragging his cross, or a father coming home from work on Friday.  It’s exausted, masculine, hard, yet full of love and vulnerability.

Run, don’t walk, to get this record.

BALKAN BEAT BOX-Blue Eyed Black Boy

Posted on May 14th, 2010 by ekko

The title of  the latest album by dancefloor rebels Balkan Beat Box is perfect: Blue Eyed Black Boy.  Because the band is never better than when they’re protesting, singing about race, or otherwise stirring the pot.  While dancing.  This is tribal, beat-driven chanting hip hop with Eastern European influences.  Yes, it’s that big a mouthful.  It’s Rage Against the Machine with less rage and more rhythm.  Even if you hate world music, you’ll find something to like here.

NEW PORNOGRAPHERS-Together

Posted on May 12th, 2010 by ekko

Matador Records’ The New Pornographers are basically an indie supergroup, wtih members like A.C. Newman, whose solo albums make any NP album pale in comparison; Kathryn “Immaculate Machine” Calder; the sultry siren Neko Case; John “The Evaporators” Collins; and, of course, Dan “Destroyer” Bejar, among other members.  And on this record, they’re joined by folks like Zach Condon, Will Sheff, and The Dap-Kings.  I’ve never been a tremendous fan of this band’s albums, but each release has two to five singles that are always among the year’s best.  And this latest release, Together, is no exception.  I’m digging about half the album, which is pretty darn good when you consider that most albums have about one or two songs you’ll want to listen to a year from now.  But you really wanna see them live.  They kick ass.

Funny?  Or disturbing?

B.O.B.

Posted on May 11th, 2010 by ekko

Yeah, B.O.B. finally got his major label release, and I have to admit: It’s pretty damn good.  It’s an obvious attempt to hit all the markets, with appearances by a major-label rapper (who sounds indie: Lupe Fiasco), the pop girl of the month (who sounds indie: Hayley Williams), a veteran of the groundbreaking indie days (Rivers Cuomo), and the once-great-now-struggling Eminem, among others, and a cover that looks like something Kanye would drop.  And yeah, B.O.B. deserved better than this.  But again, it’s pretty good for a highly-produced, highly-marketable major label debut, and when Bobby Ray is allowed to shine, his skills and charm do push through all the glitz and guest stars.

And it looks like he might have this summer’s Crazy on his platter . . .

HOW CAN I GET IN ON THIS?

    • Email me
      for the specifics but, basically:
    • I listen to all submissions of entire albums, not songs or compilations.
    • With rare exceptions I will not review material protected by the RIAA. So Sony, BMG, etc., don't start sending me crap. I'm not interested.
    • I don't listen to streams.
    • I won't read online comic-books. I may read .pdfs. I will read all hardcopy submissions.
    • I will review only submissions that I can recommend. I'm not here to do negative reviews.
