EDDY SUPPRESSION RING-Rush to Relax

Posted on September 20th, 2010 by ekko

I love the title of the latest album by Australia’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring: Rush to Relax.  Not just because of the obvious irony, but because it so thoroughly, so accurately summarizes this band’s laid-back fast-punk sound.

Lead singer Brendan Suppression sings with a forceful squeal-yell, but he never sounds urgent.  A little hurried, perhaps, but his vocals lack the self-serious rage and rancor that usually accompanies bands of this sort (think Fugazi or Black Flag).  Instead, Suppression sounds like he’s kinda laughing at all of this.  He sounds, well, kinda laid back.

The band has won all kinds of awards in their native land, but they’re still fairly unknown here in the U.S.  That’s too bad,  because this brand of punk rock is a breath of fresh air in a genre that tends to sound the same regardless of who is on the mike.  Which is not to say that Suppression is the only thing worth nothing here.  Punk bands aren’t known for their ability to jam, but the 6+ minute opus “Turning Out” shows a band that plays together with a single mind.  On the spoken “Gentleman,” the band is led through their gyrations and swings by the offbeat-for-a-love-song lyrics (“I’ll cut you veggies if you don’t eat meat”), but guitarist Eddy Current punches it up with an expertly played, deceptively simple solo.  Other songs like Second Guessing allow bassist Rob Solid and drummer Danny Current to shine, being built around a hard, driving rhythm.  This is more Stooges than Iggy solo, in other words–the band doesn’t rest overmuch on its cultish lead singer–although Suppression certainly seems like he could bear the weight.

KILLERS KOVERS

Posted on September 18th, 2010 by ekko

I know my blog is a little random: Funny pictures, lots of music reviews, long pieces about comic books, news about movies and TV (and comics), but I think I should be getting more props as a covers blog.  I post covers every week.  Gimme some love, blogoverse!

The Killers’ breakthrough album, Hot Fuss, was a major-label “sounds like indie” extravaganza.  I’ve listened to it probably more than 90% of the albums in my collection, and I’ve never gotten sick of it.  I know it’s overblown recycled Interpol (which itself was recycled 1980s glamgoth), but there’s nothing wrong with imitation, as long as it’s done well.  And I have to say: Hot Fuss is basically perfect.  I’m much less of a fan of Sam’s Town, and I found their most recent album dull and unlistenable.  But Hot Fuss remains genius.

Plus, most posts go up to ten.

But this one goes up to 11!

KILLERS KOVERS

All These Things That I’ve Done-Sharleen Spiteri.  This is acoustic, but this woman’s voice is so huge that you don’t even notice.

All These Things That I’ve Done-Matt Willis.  “I got soul but I’m not a soldier” doesn’t make sense.  But every time I hear it, my heart swells.  Matt Willis’ take on this, my favorite Killers’ song, adds a Billy Idol sneer.

Mr. Brightside vs. Hudson Mohawke-Datahowler

Mr. Brightside-This Unique Museum.  This one’s a little too light and airy for my tastes.  This song is a bust-out-of-the-gate explosion, and they kinda take the energy out of it.  But at least it’s different.

Mr. Brightside-PlayRadioPlay!  The inevitable technolectronica cover.

Mr. Brightside-McFly.  Basically, the original version.  On speed.

Mr. Brightside-Amy MacDonald.  An acoustic version by a gal with an amazing voice.

Somebody Told Me-Daniel Bedingfield.  This one’s a little weird, but I reallly dig the stop-start, hard-strummed acoustic sound.

Smile Like You Mean It-David Gray

All these Things That I’ve Done-Michael Tolcher

Mr. Brightside-Jhader

LAND OF TALK-Fun and Laughter (EP)

Posted on September 18th, 2010 by ekko

Land of Talk?  Really?  Aren’t they kind of like The Sundays?  What the hell is Ekko doing listening to that atmosphemo tripe?  Uh . . . Enjoying himself, that’s what!

If you’ve never given this Montreal band a try before, this may be a good place to start.  The October 2009 release was an event: Lead singer Lizzie Powell had taken a year off due to voice problems, and her return brought a colleciton of songs that were expressions of . . . Pure joy. I liked this a hell of a lot more than their earlier work: Much happier, much more melodic, and much more . . . “Song-y,” I guess, is the word.  This is what music should be.

Get it from Saddle Creek for seven bucks.

NOBUNNY RETURNS!

Posted on September 16th, 2010 by ekko

Nobunny‘s “Love Visions” was the 12th best album of 2008.  No shit.  And I still have no idea who the fuck they are. Their Wiki page is hilarious, and it reads their current line up as:

  • Nobunny – Vocals, rhythm guitar
  • Touchy Tony – Vocals, bass guitar
  • Elvis Christ – Vocals, drums, lead guitar
  • Danaheim – Drums

They’ve also got several dozen former members listed there, including Ryen Eggleston, Mark Beef, and TV’s Daniel.

Their music is even crazier.  Some favorites off of the new one are the lead track “Ain’t It a Shame” and the song about a new dance craze: “(Do the) Fuck Yourself.”

There’s nothing beautiful here.  Just brash electric garage throwback punk.

Do the Fuck Yourself

BONUS PUNK!

Janie Jones (Clash cover)-Pete Doherty
