The George A. Romero sequel to “Night of the Living Dead” was great—zombies in a shopping mall! Hare Krishna zombie! Hell’s Angel eaten while plugged into a pulse monitor! But if the purpose of these 12 posts are to prepare you for The Walking Dead, then the 2004 remake is the place to go. The zombies move fast (unlike in The Walking Dead), but the themes of survival and family are modernized, and in this one, the survivors actually reach the island at the end. The best part of the remake was the opening credits, which featured a “news” montage about the outbreak. And if you’re looking at a few extra hours, definitely screen the original as well. Two great zombie flicks. Two days in one post.

KOTCHY-Baggy Spandex

Posted on October 21st, 2010 by ekko

Kotchy is super cool.

Kotchy samples Don McLean and Elvis Costello.

Kotchy also samples a lot of other artists, like Neil Young and Billy Joel, but it’s often so subtle you can’t quite tell who he’s biting off.

Kotchy isn’t offended if you call his Baggy Spandex release a mash up.

Kotchy knows it’s so much more than just a mash up.

Kotchy says he made it from a bag of records he found in the trash because he thought the records looked like they would belong to the the secretary from Ghostbusters.

Kotchy saw someone running down the street wearing baggy spandex shorts when he found the aforementioned albums.

Kotchy is kinda weird, in a cool/retro way.

Kotchy is from Brooklyn.

Kotchy’s name was given to him by his granma (isn’t that sweet?).

Kotchy doesn’t have a band–it’s just him.

Kotchy’s Baggy Spandex is truly awesome, and probably pretty different from anything you’ve heard before.

Kotchy’s Baggy Spandex might just be the best free album of the year.

Kotchy will let you have it for free by clicking here.

Kotchy tastes like this:Norman Costello

Kotchy also has lots of other free stuff here.

THE 12 DAYS OF ZOMBIES: Day 2: Night of the Living Dead

Posted on October 21st, 2010 by ekko

In honor of the coming of AMC’s The Walking Dead, I’m telling you—nay, insisting: Load up your Netflix queue! Get reacquainted with the most important films of the brain-eating genre, in preparation for the Best. Halloween. Ever.  And there’s nothing better, nothing more important, than the granddaddy of all modern zombie films. No, I’m not talking about the original black and white
film, The Mummy. I’m talking about George A. Romero’s black and white Night of the Living Dead. If I have to tell you about it, you’re way behind the power curve. I saw it for the first time when I was eight, and we were vacationing in a cabin at the end of a long dirt road in Maine. My mom and I lasted until Margaret holes up in the house, and I was too scared to go on. So I saw about 20 minutes of it.  I slept on the floor of my parents’ room for a week.

The movie was made independently in 1968, on a budget of about $100 grand, and has to date made over $30 million. It is therefore one of the most profitable movies ever. Romero, however, got almost nothing for it.

THE 12 DAYS OF ZOMBIES: Day 1!

Posted on October 20th, 2010 by ekko

On the twelfth day before Halloween, my favorite blog gave to me . . . 12 viewing recommendations to prepare for The Walking Dead! The show will shamble on in on Halloween Night, and you need to start getting ready! I’ve already done a top 10 zombie list, but these 12 are specifically to inform you about the state of the zombie nation today. Right now. As in, what are the essential ingredients of the comic book that will be adapted by AMC on Halloween night?

Of course, I’m starting off with 28 Days Later. The 2002 film was the inspiration for the beginning of Robert Kirkman’s groundbreaking comic book: A man wakes up, only to find everyone around him gone. The haunting, desolate shots of an abandoned London will stay with you longer than the zombies themselves, perhaps. Some fault the second half for becoming too “action movie” like, but man’s inhumanity to man is an essential theme of the modern zombie flick. That cynicism—that when the dead eat humans, the surviving humans will turn on each other, is an essential element of Kirkman’s brilliant narrative.

JULIE CHRISTMAS-The Bad Wife

Posted on October 19th, 2010 by ekko

It’s hard to tell from her press photo, but Julie Christmas is a hottie.  By which I mean that her vocal style burns.  The Brooklyn native’s solo debut, The Bad Wife, will be available on November 9th, 2010, from Rising Pulse Records.  Just in time to buy it for all the Lorena Bobbit types on your X-Mas list.

Christmas has been a part of underground bands like Battle of Mice and Spylacopa (along with folks from The Dillinger Escape Plan, Candiria and Isis), so you know you’re in for unusual angry hardcore.  That’s a given.  What you might not expect is a voice that sounds adorable even while she’s doing her best to grab your earlobes and crack your chin into her knee.  Power, people, that’s what I’m talking about.  Like Bjork on her bloodiest day.  This album will kick you in the head and drop you to the curb.

Like all good hardcore, it’s not just a bunch of screaming and fuzz. That’s what you find in bad hardcore.  This is art.  Raw, naked, passionate, and on fire.  And she can do slow and sultry, too, sounding like Pat Benetar off the leash and drunk as Hell, looking for a man to f–k then eat.  Or eat then f–k.  Or whatever.

When God made rock and roll, this is what he really meant.

40 WATT HYPE; BRITISH SEA POWER

Posted on October 18th, 2010 by ekko

A few shots from the mailbag that you might want to hear . . .

40 Watt Hype

Soulful, experimental live-band hip hop, with that Central Mexicali flavor.

Echoes (Art Hodge Remix)

British Sea Power

You guys probably know all about BSP.  They’ve been around forever, and this is their most listenable album yet.  Which is to say, I really dig all their work–I just don’t find it very accessible.  This one seems to be an effort to broaden their audience, and it’s much appreciated.  Great stuff.

Zeus

GASLAMP KILLER

I’ve heard about this guy for a while now, so I was happy to get this promo.  From his “Death Gate” EP on Brainfeeder Records, it’s 15 minutes of wild electronic-based music.
