THE LAST ROYALS (EP)

Posted on January 14th, 2011 by ekko

Coming out of New York, The Last Royals have released an urban pop EP–by which I mean that the songs remind the listener of the city.  Not that they’re rap.  Far from it.  It’s  electro pop (shades of Gorillaz) cynical tales of living in a world of concrete and steel.  “Ask anyone in a falling elevator: ‘Does the steel and the glass make it clear?’”  Lovers have “walls that come between” them.  The songs are about the heartlessness of structure, and the need for love.  They’re on Brooklyn’s own Ooh La La records (shout out to the hood!).

$4.95 for five songs on Amazon, or $4.99 for five songs on iLike.  Good deal!

MORUF-Garden State of Mind: Ready To Live

Posted on January 12th, 2011 by ekko

New Jersey’s Moruf returns with the sequel to “Garden State of Mind: The Prelude” with “Garden State of Mind: Ready To Live,” which plays on a lot of the same themes.  It’s at bottom a positive jam about “unpositive” things–finding God in the streets, living around crime but not in it, and being a person with faith and love when surrounded by negativity.  But it’s not heavy–the production feels like 9th Wonder at times (soaring horns), J Dilla at others. This is a great example of how hip hop can be elevated and elevating–it’s an art form capable of many forms of expression, not just a tool to sell Courvoisier and Addidas.  If you like Tribe Called Quest or Common, dig in.

Try a couple cuts . . .

Best “article” on the Katy Perry and Sesame Street debacle ever.  Because pictures are BIGGER than words……

THE OLYMPIC SYMPHONIUM-The City Won’t Have Time to Fight

Posted on January 10th, 2011 by ekko

They call it “chamber folk pop,” the gentle songs that make up The Olympic Symphonium‘s third album, “The City Won’t Have Time To Fight.”  It sounds a bit like The Beach Boys turned way down to sleepy-mellow.  The music feels traditional, even if the compositions are 100 percent originals.  Lots of harmony, acoustic instrumentation, easy finger-style guitar work . . . Nice and soft on the ears.

Settle Down

And here’s an older cut . . .
