SKI BEATZ KARATE SCHOOL PART 2, AND OTHER FREE STUFF

Posted on August 18th, 2011 by ekko

SKI BEATZ-24 Hour Karate School Part 2

Ski Beatz has released the sequel to their major-label album as a mixtape: 24 Hour Karate School Part II.  It includes material by Freddie Gibbs, Nicole Wray, Cassidy, GLC, Stat Quo, and one of my favorite current new jacks, STS.

I can’t say I loved the mixtape.  The STS cut is pretty commercial, but everything he does is solid, but overall, the beats far outclass the rhymes.  And although this is a producer’s record, you can’t do that.  It diminishes the project overall.  Still, it’s worth a download for the cuts by Locksmith (who I’d never heard of before, but he kills on “Metabolic”); the STS cut; “Larry Bird” featuring Stalley; and “Frontin’” with Tabi Bonney.

Get it here or here.

Here’s some more mixtapes and free stuff, and generally stuff worth leaving here for…

Adult Swim’s latest free singles collection: 11 songs, by the likes of El-P (a fantastic cut “Drones Over Brooklyn); Tallest Man on Earth; The Rapture covering the Bee Gees…It’s free, man, so what do you care.  Just go get it!

Go here for the best songs of July 2011.

My buddy CD turned me on to a tribute to De La Soul’s Three Feet High and Rising record.  It’s a free download from Find Magazine.

Here’s yet another Wale mixtape, if that’s your thing.

CAROLINE SMITH AND THE GOOD NIGHT SLEEPS-Little Wind

Posted on August 18th, 2011 by ekko

Caroline Smith is the reason I started this blog. Well, not exactly. But people like her, with her spirit. Her (and her band’s) kickstarter-funded, DIY album, Little Wind, is due out on September 20, and it’s chock full of indie singer-songwriter gems.  I loved just about every quirky, cute, sexy and darling song on this little record.  Funny thing, though, is I can’t figure out who submitted it…Seem to have lost the records.  Well, whoever did, thank you!

“HELLO SUNSHINE”-STS and Yelawolf

Posted on August 17th, 2011 by ekko

Continuing my exception to my “I don’t post singles” rule because everything STS does is gold. Even when he teams up with a hack like Yelawolf.  It’s the last official leak from his upcoming debut album, The Illustrious.

PUNISHERMAX: A Look At The Garth Ennis Run (Part One)

Posted on August 16th, 2011 by ekko

I enjoyed writing about every issue of The Amazing Spider-Man so much, I’ve decided to review another important book: PunisherMax.  I can’t write about every issue of every Punisher book because between the miniserieses and one-shots and various volumes of “Punisher” titles there’s probably twenty or so separate series, and most of them are . . . Well . . . Shite.  I could start with the Marvel Knights Punisher revival of the series, also written by Garth Ennis, but that was a very different sort of book.  It was good, don’t get me wrong, but it was still Marvel Universe material without anything truly unique.  Good for what it was, and great to see Wolverine get run over by a steamroller, but it wasn’t a game-changer.  It wasn’t worth writing a comprehensive article about it.

No, I’m writing only about Garth Ennis’ run on PunisherMax.  Because when issue #1 of that book broke free from Garth Ennis’ violent little mind, it helped change the world.  Think about it: Marvel was recovering from bankruptcy both financially and intellectually.  New EiC Joe Quesada needed to do something, immediately, that would signal to the world that comic books—in particular, Marvel comic books—were not a dead medium.  And he delivered

I had so much to gab about—I’m such a cape-yenta—that I split the news column this week into one about movies/TV and one about print.  This is the print one.  The other one came yesterday.  So unless you like reading (i.e., are over the age of 30), you probably don’t want to …

Hit the break for news about The Walking Dead; Captain America joining Alpha Flight; the end of Batman, Inc.; the return of the Human Torch; and two new Avengers teams!

500 BARS

Game has done this kind of thing before, freestyling forever.  Game isn’t as good as he used to be, but this one is pretty f-ing hot.

E-DUBBLE

Posted on August 16th, 2011 by ekko

This is what I thought when I received “Robots Can’t Drink” as a single in the mailbag: “E-dubble?  What’s that, an MC Breed reference?”  But, no.  E-Dubble is an indie Baltimore rapper who speaks on politics, gangsterism, class warfare, and, most of all, love of hip hop.  He’s easily as good as any other indie rapper on the scene right now–fantastic beats and hooks and creative, complex rhymeplay, and incredibly versatile, powerful delivery.

And he’s white.

Too many indie rappers are full of “positivity” or have a single message.  E-Dubble seems to be able to be whatever the moment calls for:

Political:

“We need some new shit to get the youth involved . . . Three wars goin’ on got the troops involved . . . Ben Bernake with the benchpress/He’s got a tough job, we in tough times/You want eloquence?  I got tough rhymes.”

-Clap On Clap Off

Profane:

“Origami mommies get their labias swollen”

-Robots Can’t Drink

Hilarious:

“I got hair on my nuts/And I’m crazy as fuck!”

-FF#15 (Class Clown) (Over Hanson’s MmmmBop)

True to the game:

“I ain’t stoppin’ till the breath’s gone/And even then I’ll probably hit ‘em with the death song.”

This guy’s amazing.  You owe it to yourself to check him out…

Here’s his Soundcloud page.

Here’s some choice cuts:

Class Clown (Hanson sample)

Sidelines (The Zox “Pachobel’s Canon”)

Conundrum (J-Dilla feat. Black Thought “Reality TV”)

Get out of the Park (Sleigh Bells “Riot Rhythm”)

COMIC BOOK MOVIE AND TV NEWS

Posted on August 15th, 2011 by ekko

With the last blockbuster hitting last weekend (Apes), the summer action season is basically over.  And it’s only the beginning of August!  We could have fit one more Marvel movie in there!  Anyway, of the “big” superflicks ,Transformers did the best (I don’t count Pirates or Potter as comic book movies), which was expected.  But what about the “real” comic book movies:

  • Thor ($450 million).  The first in line did the best, which shows that fatigue does play a role in box office.  Also, this was the probably the most fun and most accessible of the lot, with lots of hunky guys to bring in the chicks.
  • X-Men: First Class.  In my view, the most interesting (and best) superhero movie of the summer clocked in at around $350m.  I hope that’s enough for a sequel—the damn thing cost less than half that to make.
  • Captain America.  Made $250 million so far.  See, it’s heartening that the three best comic book movies also did the best.
  • Green Lantern.  Made just over $160 million, with a production and promotion budget that topped $200m.  Some called it the death blow for superhero movies, but in truth it was just a bad movie.  Not a bad genre.
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  It’s really too soon to tell, but it’s opening week was a lot better than expected (and better than several of the films above it on this list).  It’s clocked $80 mil so far.  And it was way, way, waaaaay better than I expected it to be.
  • Priest.  This was a “smaller” film ($60m budget) so I don’t think you can say it was a flop at $76 million.  And I thought it was actually pretty good.  A B-picture.
  • Cowboys and Aliens.  This was savaged so badly by critics and friends of mine that I’ve avoided it.  Apparently, most other people did, too.  It’s made about $70m so far . . . But cost over $160 million to make.

Now, hit the break for news about upcoming comic book movies and TV shows, including items on the new Marvel TV properties; Amazing Spider-Man 2 (already!); and … IASIP?!?
