The above-the-cut news has to be that THE D.C. CRISES ON INFINITE EARTH FINALS NEVER HAPPENED!  Kinda.

DC Comics publisher Dan Didio Facebooked on Tweeter or Tweeted on Facebook or something that “there have been no Crisis events in the New DCU.”  Some fanboys are all pissed off because, like, those were such big events, and, hey, they’re still on my shelf so they must have happened!  Me, I say: The Crises pretty much all sucked, so good riddance.  My only question: Batman is supposed to have his whole Grant Morrison history intact, and he died during a Crisis, so…Riddle me that, Danny boy.  Then he clarified later that there “have been ‘crisis’ in our characters lives, but they aren’t exactly the Crisis you read before.”  Which basically means we can expect DC’s next summer event to be a new Crisis.  Sigh.  So much for the new 52.  Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Hit the cut.

KOO KOO KANGA ROO-Midnight Slushie

Posted on October 6th, 2011 by ekko

This one is my kids’ fault.  I was playing through some of my (non-R-rated) submissions in the car with them, and I was about to hit skip when they both screamed “No!”  They loved this.  So I stayed a little longer.  And I have to admit, there’s something here.  I’m not sure what.  But there’s something.

They call themselves a “fake kids band” and promote themselves by saying…

Koo Koo Kanga Roo is all about dancing, yelling, and bringing the party. Founders Bryan and Neil won’t be satisfied until the entire room has joined in on the fun. Think the Beastie Boys multiplied by Sesame Street plus the driving dance beats of Daft Punk and the live show antics of the Flaming Lips! You will get sweaty and wild! Oh…and costumes are encouraged!

Taste “Ninja Training ft Justin Pierre” (direct mp3 DL).

Name your price at Bandcamp.

WALKEN ON SUNSHINE

I thought it’d be cool to combine a Hell, a Hello, and a Jesus in one post. Plus, they’re two terrific EPs.

“Hello Jesus” is Steve Gatesʼ debut EP–three originals and a cover of Willie Nelson’s “You were always on my mind” as a duet with a lady named Catherine MacLellan. It’s mellow country rock, well written, well performed…And Steve’s got a really cool voice. I wouldn’t say it’s as bad as Bob Dylan, but it also isn’t as good as Lyle Lovett. It’s unique, special, and perfect for the songs he plays.

And they’re somber indie moodrockers Coyotes in the Living Room. I can’t find out anything about them. They at least deserve their own website! Who the hell are these guys?  Cop their EP free from Bandcamp.

Anyhow, they’ve got a Kills cover on their record…

Here’s cuts from each EP.  Go support the artists.

TYLER RAMSEY-The Valley Wind

Posted on October 3rd, 2011 by ekko

Who’s Tyler Ramsey?  Yes, he’s the guy from Band of Horses and Avett Brothers.  His solo album is a gentle collection of intimate numbers on the wonderful label Fat Possum Records.  It sounds a little like Band of Horses.  Not that there’s anything wrong with that.  It’s got that Southern, soaring sound featured in every BOH tune—but without the desperation.

It’s a thumb way, way up from me.

  • Berkeley Place is also 6 blocks of Brooklyn real estate, emerging from Sackett St. and ending at Banana Hill, a small park that grows a foot each year from dog shit and the corpses of dead rats. • WHAT THE HELL IS INDIE MUSIC? An independent record label (or indie record label) is a record label operating without the funding of or outside the organizations of the major record labels. - Wikipedia.org That means they ain't in the RIAA, dude.

HOW CAN I GET IN ON THIS?

    • Email me
      for the specifics but, basically:
    • I listen to all submissions of entire albums, not songs or compilations.
    • With rare exceptions I will not review material protected by the RIAA. So Sony, BMG, etc., don't start sending me crap. I'm not interested.
    • I don't listen to streams.
    • I won't read online comic-books. I may read .pdfs. I will read all hardcopy submissions.
    • I will review only submissions that I can recommend. I'm not here to do negative reviews.
