GREGORY SCOTT SLAY-Horsethief Beats

Posted on November 20th, 2011 by ekko

Gregory Scott Slay was the drummer for Remy Zero, and he died last year of Cystic Fibrosis–a painful way to go. Horsethief Beats, recorded while he was sick, is the drummer’s solo record: He did everything here.

And it’s fantastic.

COMIC BOOK NEWS: (almost) ALL MARVEL EDITION

Posted on November 19th, 2011 by ekko

Now that the heat is off the New 52, almost everything I have to report this week is about Marvel. But before the fun stuff, a little bit about an article that actually made me cry.

I don’t know how many of you remember Bill Mantlo.

He was one of the most prolific writers during Marvel’s most creative period (1975-1985), and was the creator of Cloak and Dagger, Rocket Raccoon, The Human Fly, and ROM the Spaceknight. He brought The Micronauts to Jim Shooter and insisted that Marvel do a toy-tie-in that ended up outlasting the toy itself by several years (and won many awards as well). He had extensive, influential runs with characters like Alpha Flight, The Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Shang Chi, among others. He wrote some of my favorite individual issues of my childhood, including The Avengers #174 (“Captured by the Collector!”); Fantastic Four #217 (“By H.E.R.B.I.E. Betrayed”); Amazing Spider-Man #237 (where he fights Stilt Man); and Marvel Team Up Annual #6 (Spidey with Cloak and Dagger and The New Mutants).

Mantlo gave up comic books—and a lucrative income—to fight for social justice, and then was hit by a car and suffered irreparable brain damage. Since then, he’s been screwed by his insurance company and is basically all alone. You can donate to his care at this website.  I did. It’s the least we comic book fans can do. And if that Cloak & Dagger TV show ever gets picked up, they oughtta take care of him with some of the proceeds.

For happier news, hit the break.

HOLMES-Covers

Posted on November 18th, 2011 by ekko

2011 is definitely the year of the cover. And Holmes‘ project is “another one of those.” But it’s also one of the more unusual of the lot. Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day” becomes a sunny single.  “You Dropped a Bomb on Me” becomes a 1970s AM single.  My favorite Jacksons tune is still funky, but now sounds white and nerdy.  “Don’t Be Cruel” sounds like electronica Beatles.  My second favorite Genesis song is a straightforward pop.  (My favorite one is “Man on the Corner,” in case you were wondering.)  Musically, it’s tight and fun, with gues appearances by Joel Shearer (Damien Rice, Alanis Morissette), Chris Bruce (M’chelle Ndegeocello, Sheryl Crow) Lawrence Katz (Bosstones), and Michael Jerome Moore (Blind Boys of Alabama, Better Than Ezra).

Wild, wild stuff.  And make sure you don’t leave before the end, or you’ll miss the a capella ELO cover.

It Was a Good Day (Ice Cube cover)

A few other versions…

It Was A Good Day-The Ride

Quagmire Swim Team’s version

And here’s my second favorite Genesis song, but not the Holmes version.  You’ll have to buy the album to get that.

That’s All-Claire and the Reasons

And here’s the vid, which I highly recommend.

ALABAMA SHAKES (EP)

Posted on November 17th, 2011 by ekko

Once upon a time, there was this amazing Rolling Stones soundalike band called the Deadstring Brothers.  I f*^%ing loved that band.  They’ve fallen off a bit, but those first singles they put out, and their first two albums, were absolute fire.

Alabama Shakes remind me of them.

Not only do they have a wicked cool Southern band name, but they play the blues like…Well, like nobody else I can think of.  And they’ve got a raw, powerful passion that recalls the greats of this genre: lead singer Brittany Howard delivers every line with the aching of rejection that recalls Janis Joplin; lead guitarist Heath Fogg blasts licks like John Popper; and the bass-and-drums of Zac Cockrell and Steve Johnson are tighter than the duo of the The White Stripes.

I know I can be prone to hyperbole, but this is the Greatest Blues EP Of The Year and one of the Best New Bands out there. Yeah, hype it. Take a listen to “Hold On,” below, and the live performance I added to prove my point and tell me I’m wrong. Go ahead. And I’ll ban your fucking IP address for having no taste.

Hold On

Just four measly bucks at bandcamp.  C’mon, dear readers, dig deep!

Here they are live:

MAILBAG! Southerly and Yash Kapoor!

Posted on November 16th, 2011 by ekko

A couple artists I’m posting on ’cause I’m grateful for the submissions.

SOUTHERLY-Youth

First, Southerly, possibly one of the best-named bands I’ve heard in a while.  They sound…Southerly.  On Greyday Records which, like the band’s name, is a perfect label for them.  They sound like a grey, southerly day.  Dark, Americana indie rock.

Love the album cover, too.

Good stuff.

Suffer

All Abandoned

Do We Believe

YASH KAPOOR-Saight

Next up, Yash Kapoor’s “Saight” album.  I’m posting this with Southerly because they’re both kinda heavy and dark.  YK tends to be brooding, serious, with a purposeful flow.

St8 outta Vancouver.
