I told you a few days ago that Jason Isbell’s new album is one of the best of the year so far. Well, now my wife agrees with me. So it must be true!

And just to prove how fantastic it is, I am posting a show from his recent tour, celebrating this wonderful record.

The show is Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit from April 8 in Florence, Alabama, and it features what I think is their first time covering “Hey Pocky Way,” as well as their “usual” cover of Talking Heads and less-usual covers of Springsteen and Hendrix. Hendrix? Now, that takes balls.

10. BUSBUS offers “f/yuck”, an all-covers album featuring the songs of Pedro the Lion, Johanna Newsome, Velvet Underground, and more. Free from Bandcamp.

9. FROM EXILE offer an EP of Nine Inch Nails covers. It’s metal takes on Reznor’s industrial metal sound, so you won’t find radically different takes on the tunes, but it’s still pretty solid work. Go here.

5. NEIL YOUNG TRIBUTE. A tribute webalbum called “Headed for the Ditch can be bought-for-nothin’ here. It’s a “coming together” of Bandcamp bands. There’s a bunch of songs you’d expect to see here (After The Gold Rush, Helpless, Sugar Mountain) but some less-covered ones as well, like See The Sky About To Rain and Cripple Creek Ferry. In all, a solid gathering of tribes and vibes.

4. RYAN ADAMS. Tons of RA covers are up at Cover Me. I already had them, but if you don’t, you’ll probably want a bunch.

3. MIKE MIZWINSKI has a remarkably high quality new live set posted on the archive, with covers of Grateful Dead, Allmans, and many others–acoustic-like. It’s very, very good. You definitely want to go get it here.

I loves me some Dead, and this “show” is a true keeper. Compiled by a fan, it contains all songs sung and performed by Joan Osborne, her band, and the Grateful Dead. I hate Linda Perry for a lot of reasons. First of all, 4 Non Blondes was a supercool rock group with a supertough female lead–something there’s not nearly enough of in modern rock–and she broke ‘em up because they were getting too big. Then, she did this wicked cool solo album with another powerful female lead–Grace Slick–and didn’t follow that one up, either. Then she loaned her strength to Pink and crafted a popgirl record that was actually pretty damn awesome. Now, she sends me a submission–Deep Dark Robot–that’s as good as anything she’s done before, and I see it’s on an imprint, Custard Records. Unfortunately, it’s an RIAA album. And I have a policy of not getting sued, and at the same time trying to help struggling artists who haven’t been able to get major label support yet (or have eschewed it). Yeah, but it’s her own label, so it’s okay. Really. I hope.

This album is just too good–nay, too great–to ignore. If you dug her prior work, you’ll love this. If you always wished Melissa Etheridge would move away from formula blues and really knock an emotionally deep song out of the park, you’ll love this. If you like Sleater Kinney or any other grrrl group, you’ll love it. Goddamn it, you’ll just love it. So taste it below and then go buy it. And to all the girls Ms. Perry has helped to stardom, take note: This is what real, raw, and gutsy music sounds like.

Fuck you, Linda Perry. Please don’t sue me for offering your brilliant music to my fans.

Dump was the name James McNew of Yo La Tengo when he recorded a bunch of home-jobbies that aren’t available pretty much anywhere, especially the all-Prince covers album “That Skinny Motherfucker with the High Voice?” It was so fucking cool that Prince himself sued and got it squashed. But that didn’t stop Jim from recording this set, along with his girlfriend on keyboards, when he opened for Oneida last year.

This is wicked rare, so scoop it up. I’ll probably take it down quick.

Back on September 14, 1991, Brian Henneman (Bottle Rockets/Chicken Truck), Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt) and Tom Parr (Chicken Truck) got together in St. Looey to play as The Dust Bowl Club in the KDHX radio studio. They performed all kindsa old classics and new rootsies. And since I haven’t been posting bootlegs so much lately (shame on me!), I figgered it’s time to get back into the concert groove and treat you all to this one.
