RANDOM CHAOS

1.  If you don’t go to Fong Songs, you’re an idiot.  He’s quitting the game(!) and rewarding us with his 100 favorite covers of all time.  And there’s actually way more than 100.  I’m gonna miss him.

2.  Some Chinese website keeps spamming me with comments.  Annoying.

3. Childish Gambino (Donald Glover–the black dude named  from my favorite sit com, Community) has a mixtape!  And it’s off the hook.  I mean, where else will you hear lyrics where a guy compares to himself to a fat guy getting on a plane?  And he says he raps about himself not being on a boat.  Y’know, he’s trying to be serious-like.  But he’s still a funny motherf*cker.  He can’t help himself. Go here to get it for free.

These Girls

4.  Chris and his gang have a bunch of interviews up with underground indie guys.  Good stuff.

5. Ryan’s got a nice piece on London’s flavor of the month, Kingsley Flood. They’re unsigned (for now). And The Blue Walrus recently named “Boy and Bear” a band to watch. Check out some new music before your friends know about it!

6. Jesse Lester McReynolds, a recognized bluegrass legend and grammy winner, will be releasing a “Songs Of The Grateful Dead” on Woodstock Records on October 5, 2010. Thought I’ve give it a shout out.

7. Zeppelin-Jen Wood (direct download).

8. And I’m loving Langford’s album more every day. Getting Used to Uselessness.

9. And, finally, Comics Reporter named Howard the Duck one of the 25 most emblematic comics of the 1970s. I love Howie. I even have him on my desk at work because he’s “trapped in a world he never made.”

See Green covers LCD Soundsystem’s “I Can Change.” (link)

Allison Crowe is a great artist, and there’s a very eclectic collection of her covering various folks at Cover Me, including the Rolling Stones “Shine A Light” (one of my top 10 favorite Stones tunes). (link)

1.  Ryan O’Neal, who participated in FreeIceCream.Net’s terrific “Bohemian Rap CD” is releasing a free song every week here.  Check it out.  I think you’ll dig the beats N rhymes.

2.  Rap Attack is the first single off of Atari Blitzkrieg’s 15th EP, AlphaBetaCaution, produced by Krohme and Atari Blitzkrieg, and featuring the way-too-underrated C Ray Walz.  Check it out:
Rap Attack (direct DL)

1. DJ Ayres and The Rub team are always reliable for some good stuff.  Now, they’ve got the history of hip hop, volume one, a mixtape, here.

2.  Cover Me has Eels covers!

3.  Fong’s got a wickedly eclectic post that includes Michele Shocked (voice like a f-ing angel) doing Neil Young.

4.  LHB has his “blogs to read in 2010.”  I’m not on the list, but I’m not surprised.  I never get juice from other bloggers.  They all hate me.  Dunno why.  Don’t think I’m sophisticated enuf.  Anyway, I don’t hate the game, or the playa.

5.  And now, some samplers and mixes: The 20-song Glastonbury sampler; Clash the Discko’s latest dance mix; Vans Warped Tour sampler.

6.  And last but not least, one of my favorite indie pop bands is returning!  The Features!  Details and free song here.

1.  Largehearted Boy has lots of live sets from Bonnaroo 2010.

2.  Ugliest. T-Shirt.  Ever.  Look to the right.

3.  Why we need more minority heroes in comics.  Go here.

4.  Music for Kids Who Can’t Read So Good reviews the two newly released Arcade Fire tracks–with downloads.  Or go here for a recent Arcade Fire bootleg.

  • The NJ Underground writes about The NJ Pop Punk revival Tour, and offers a free compilation, here.
  • Wow.  I never thought my kids would see the day when The Rolling Stones, ACDC, and a Marley all had albums in the Billboard top 20.
  • Go here to learn about why rappers hold their guns sidewayze.

* I believe in freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. But prominent Republicans like Pat Robertson and Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann openly ridicule the Muslim religion and attempts by the Obama administration to hire Muslims.

* I do not believe in big government; and * I believe higher taxes are part of the democratic agenda and lead to a dependence upon a large government.  But the Bush administration grew government more than any administration since FDR (he created a whole new Cabinet-level Department!), and he also raised taxes to a higher per capita rate than Bill Clinton and spent way way waaaaaaaay more money!  At the same time,  Obama has delivered the biggest tax cut since before Ronald Reagan, yet workers are worse off than ever.

* I believe government control of the healthcare industry will destroy the best healthcare in the world; and * I believe that a large standing army is the best deterrent to violence in the world today.  Yet increases in the budget of the Department of Veterans Affairs–Government-run healthcare–are always supported by Republicans (and in fact VA health care has been found by independent international review agencies to be the best run large health care system in the world).

* I believe that marriage has always been and should always be between one man and one woman.  Yet Republicans in Congress divorce at a higher rate than Democrats–and many of them get re-married.

  • Is it too soon to note that Gary Coleman died of a stroke?  Get it?
  • Cover Me has wisely left Blogger before Blogger killed the site.  Update your bookmarks, and check out the terrific new look.

What are you still doing here?  Go away!

Go:

. . . To Setting the Woods on Fire for a compilation of Cindy Walker tunes. Yee-haw!

. . . Here or here to see why I was right that the new Nas/Damian Marley album is a crashing, unforgivable, conventional bore.  And none of you agreed with me.  Hah!

. . . Here for the best of the many Dio funereal trib posts.

. . . Here to see Dr. Mooney’s new look.  Very slick.  But he dropped his link to me, which will likely lead to retaliation….

. . . Here for the most recent of many bloggers to say how frickin’ awesome Surfer Blood are.

. . . Here for Tobacco Manic Meat.  If you have to ask, you need to check it out.  Wild music.

. . .  Here to see some very creative prison inventions.

. . . Here for the funeral for Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show Great Job!  Such a misunderstood, terrifically disgusting show.

. . . Here for a terrific “best of” mix of Ghostface Killah!  He used to one of my favorite rappers, but he’s kinda fallen off lately.

1.  Sean’s got the new Scissor Sisters.  Good song, fun band.  Wish it was available for download, not just streaming….

2.  Captain’s Dead has a Butthole Surfers concert.  My wife dated a Butthole before she dated me.  He was a pretty wimpy dude. Didn’t take much to steal her away.  Actually, he was just a clarinet player who did a few studio tracks with the bands right about the time the Surfers were in Lollapalooza.  They came out with shotguns and fired blanks into the crowd.  Good times.

3.  9 Bullets has the top 5 Lucero tunes available for download.

4.  Among the recent additions to the live music archive are:

5.  The Gobbler’s Knob does shout-out posts, too.  Great job!  There was a time when a lot of bloggers did this–it was like being in a real community.

6.  This is what gets a 10 on Pitchfuck.   I can’t disagree, but can they be any less brave?

7.  The Nas and Damien Marley album is . . . Boring.  Too bad.

8.  Junip is giving away a free EP.
