MAILBAG! Southerly and Yash Kapoor!

Posted on November 16th, 2011 by ekko

A couple artists I’m posting on ’cause I’m grateful for the submissions.

SOUTHERLY-Youth

First, Southerly, possibly one of the best-named bands I’ve heard in a while.  They sound…Southerly.  On Greyday Records which, like the band’s name, is a perfect label for them.  They sound like a grey, southerly day.  Dark, Americana indie rock.

Love the album cover, too.

Good stuff.

Suffer

All Abandoned

Do We Believe

YASH KAPOOR-Saight

Next up, Yash Kapoor’s “Saight” album.  I’m posting this with Southerly because they’re both kinda heavy and dark.  YK tends to be brooding, serious, with a purposeful flow.

St8 outta Vancouver.

DOMO GENESIS-Under the Influence

Posted on November 14th, 2011 by ekko

More great hip hop from Domo Genesis of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, the same group of L.A. rappers who spawned Tyler, The Creator. But I dig Domo much more. On this tape, he raps over some Kanye, Scarface…A bunch of great stuff.

Get it here or here.

ASAP ROCKY-Live.Love.A$AP

Posted on November 8th, 2011 by ekko

“Biggie and Nas put they ass in a blender, sprinkled some 50 and came out this nigga…”

I’m fairly certain that ASAP Rocky is dope.

I don’t usually like the whole chopped and/or screwed sound, and he plays around a lot with vocal FX, but his lyrics are undeniable.  I haven’t heard rhymes this aggressively nasty since those early Lil’ Wayne and Clipse mixtapes.

And he’s humble, too.  “My mixtape is a classic. It’s only right to put it out at retail,” he says.

Yeah.  And he’s got the major deal with RCA.  So I’m putting a link up to the entire mixtape.  It’ll come out in 2012.  In the meantime, you can find it everywhere.  And you can taste it below.

He reps Harlem, NYC.

CYHI DA PRYNCE-Jack of All Trades

Posted on November 7th, 2011 by ekko

Atlanta’s CyHi Da Prynce doesn’t wear his jurisdiction on his sleeve, which is good.  He’s accessible whether you’re  into that Fatlanta sound, or prefer something a little less laid back.

Jack of All Trades is the fifth mixtape form his artist recently signed by Kanye West, so enjoy it while you can: He’s gonna pop big soon, and then he’ll probably suck after that.

DANNY BROWN-XXX and LOGIC-Young Sinatra

Posted on November 1st, 2011 by ekko

Triple X isn’t Danny Brown’s best mixtape, but it’s still got his trademark wit, grit, and sly delivery.  He’s a grimey, hilarious rapper and XXX is a great introduction to his work.

Cop it here or here.

Young Sinatra, on the other hand, is pure fiya.

BLACKWATER JUKEBOX-Banjos and Breakbeats (EP)

Posted on October 27th, 2011 by ekko

Satan’s favorite country rock band’s EP begins with a take on Gallows Pole, the song made famous by Led Zeppelin.  But unlike Plant and Page, who sanitized the song into one about how  the doomed man was such a stud that all the girls wanted to rescue him despite his crimes, Blackwater Jukebox make a grimy, rough bounce and the end is never in doubt: This guy’s gonna die.  On the very next cut, That Voodoo Shit, the album takes a left turn at breakbeat and does a dusty rap.  Kind of.  It’s something that sounds like Junior Senior on brown acid.

Then there’s the pirate song, below, “Heave Away.”  I love this song.

And it keeps going like that.  Is this really an EP, or is just a showcase for Geordie McElroy, a self-proclaimed “DJ and folk archivist turned banjo-and-drum-machine-slinging troubadour?”

Don’t know, don’t care.  It’s fun and it’s awesome and it’s free.

FRANK RAMZ-Frankenstein: Fuck Y’all

Posted on October 19th, 2011 by ekko

I think this guy used to blog at Pigeons and Planes, but I can’t swear to that.  I really don’t know fuck all about him, but Fuck Y’all is surprisingly good.

And free.

Here.

FALSIDE-Snare Conditioning (EP)

Posted on October 1st, 2011 by ekko

Falside’s Snare Conditioning is, technically, a beat tape.  That means it’s instrumental and sample-based music without a lyricist.  But unlike most beat tapes, it isn’t a bunch of beds waiting for someone to rap over them.  In fact, it would be hard for someone to use this collection as a backdrop.  Falside’s songs—and I do mean songs—include such healthy amounts of vocal samples that they almost sound like…Songs.

Great stuff.
