More great hip hop from Domo Genesis of Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, the same group of L.A. rappers who spawned Tyler, The Creator. But I dig Domo much more. On this tape, he raps over some Kanye, Scarface…A bunch of great stuff.

I’m fairly certain that ASAP Rocky is dope.

I don’t usually like the whole chopped and/or screwed sound, and he plays around a lot with vocal FX, but his lyrics are undeniable.  I haven’t heard rhymes this aggressively nasty since those early Lil’ Wayne and Clipse mixtapes.

And he’s humble, too.  “My mixtape is a classic. It’s only right to put it out at retail,” he says.

Yeah.  And he’s got the major deal with RCA.  So I’m putting a link up to the entire mixtape.  It’ll come out in 2012.  In the meantime, you can find it everywhere.  And you can taste it below.

Atlanta’s CyHi Da Prynce doesn’t wear his jurisdiction on his sleeve, which is good.  He’s accessible whether you’re  into that Fatlanta sound, or prefer something a little less laid back.

Jack of All Trades is the fifth mixtape form his artist recently signed by Kanye West, so enjoy it while you can: He’s gonna pop big soon, and then he’ll probably suck after that.

Triple X isn’t Danny Brown’s best mixtape, but it’s still got his trademark wit, grit, and sly delivery.  He’s a grimey, hilarious rapper and XXX is a great introduction to his work.

This latest one isn’t as humorous as his past stuff–it’s more about his struggles to succeed as a rapper.  He’s not as lighthearted as he used to be.  It sounds like the life of a struggling artist has taken its hold a little bit.  Just a little.  ‘Cause he’s still got mad flow.

G-Eazy may be my new favorite rapper. Certainly, Endless Summer will be one of the best mixtapes of the year. It’s funny, it has great beats and rhymes, compelling delivery, confrontational and politically incorrect references, indie-ish samples and choruses…There’s nothing here not to like.

Ski Beatz has released the sequel to their major-label album as a mixtape: 24 Hour Karate School Part II.  It includes material by Freddie Gibbs, Nicole Wray, Cassidy, GLC, Stat Quo, and one of my favorite current new jacks, STS.

I can’t say I loved the mixtape.  The STS cut is pretty commercial, but everything he does is solid, but overall, the beats far outclass the rhymes.  And although this is a producer’s record, you can’t do that.  It diminishes the project overall.  Still, it’s worth a download for the cuts by Locksmith (who I’d never heard of before, but he kills on “Metabolic”); the STS cut; “Larry Bird” featuring Stalley; and “Frontin’” with Tabi Bonney.

The Airplane Boys mixtape, “Where’ve You Been,” is perfect for you–whether you like rap or not.  Read on, below.

It’s a current trend in rap to join up with indie artists or sample new indie singles–B.O.B. did it on his (pretty damn good) major label debut, causing him to lose a little credibility in the mainstream rap world.  Kanye has done it.  Everyone’s doing it.  But most don’t do it effectively–most don’t make full use of the indie rock ethos and sound.

Airplane Boys do.  Take “Born to Be.”  It’s got a long, obvious Arcade Fire vocal sample (from The Suburbs) at the beginning, but it builds off the song’s synth line throughout, and even maintains that creeping, desperate mood throughout.  This is more than using a sample–this is building a mixtape tribute to the song, which is what the best mixtapes really do.  That’s what makes mixtaping an art: It’s not just a showcase for a new artist, it’s a way to build a message off of existing sounds and samples that nobody would ever get clearance for in the “legal tape” world.

They even pay tribute to a great mixtape cut: Biggie Smalls’ “Party and Bullshit.”

But it’s not all samples and tributes–their original stuff is even better.

The Airplane Boys are two dudes who are also part of the Beau Monde collective.  They’re highly original, and they break the stereotype that Canadian rappers generally suck.

This is easily the best mixtape I’ve heard all year.
