By Ricardo Chucky and courtesy of Comics Alliance.
I think it’s safe to say that 2011 is the year of the comic book movie. For several years now, I’ve kept a running tab of the best and worst superhero comic book movies (and the best zombie ones, too) on a separate page—but it’s high time for an update. Hence, this post . . . Which will be reprinted on that page for posterity.

The rules:

(1) It has to be a movie. DVD movies are okay, but TV shows and TV movies don’t qualify. Maybe, if you all are interested, I’ll make a list of those one day, too.

(2) It has to be based on an English-language comic book—because I can’t read comics in any other language—or be about superheroes. Both is even better.

(3) I have to have actually seen it. If your favorite or least-fave isn’t on here, drop me a comment. I’ll do my homework.

So, send me your votes for up to 10 films for the best comic book movies of all time! You can drop a comment, or email me with your votes. Results won’t be tallied until mid-August, so you’ve got lots of time to think about it!

I know I just did one, but with the release of new Justice League pictures, and information about the Batman reboot and upcoming sequels to GI Joe and R.E.D., I couldn’t wait for a regular bi-weekly update . . . Also, I want to say that the critics who said Transformers 3 was good and better than the first . . . Were wrong.

Hit the break.

LET’S START WITH STUFF ABOUT THE NEW D.C.

• THE NEW JUSTICE LEAGUE. DC has released a Jim-Lee-drawn teaser. And I pronounceth it . . . Pretty cool. The main line-up are the big six plus a revamped Cyborg, who looks really keen, but in the background are folks like Hawkman, Green Arrow, Atom and Deadman. I still prefer Wonder Woman’s old outfit, though.

• THE NEW DC 52 IS NOT THE ULTIMATES. WELL, IT KINDA ISN’T. In Flashpoint, Green Arrow has been turned into a gun-wielding merc. Much like Ultimate Hawkeye. But it’s still unclear whether this Green Arrow will morph into the post-Flashpoint, new DCU Green Arrow.

• BATMAN. Scott Snyder is poised to take on a new Batman #1, but in every interview I’ve seen/read, he’s bending over backwards to emphasize that almost all of Batman’s history—and certainly all of his relevant, recent history at the hands of Grant Morrison—will remain intact. I don’t envy the position he’s in: Grant has been developing and building to something monumental, and the DC reboot-of-almost-everything takes most of the wind out from under Morrison’s wings. Fans (like me) are concerned, and feel betrayed. So even if Snyder knocks it out of the park—and I have a very, very strong suspicion that he will indeed hit a home run—we’re still annoyed because Batman Incorporated now has to go on hiatus for the better part of a year so that the rest of the DCU can catch up to whatever Grant’s big, ultimate plan is (was). I’m hoping Snyder will be the new architect of the Bat U, because his work on Detective Comics has
been the freshest, most unique take on the Batverse since, well, Grant Morrison.

• NOT EVERYONE GETS A TROPHY. DC didn’t give a solo book to Canterbury Cricket, who appeared in his own Flashpoint one-shot this week. I’m not kidding. He’s a dude who turns into a cricket. Very odd. And, frankly, stupid.

NOW, LET’S TALK MOVIES AND T.V.

• G.I. JOE 2. Will feature ninjas and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. And it might even feature The RZA as a sensei. Hey, I dug the first one in all its pulpy Larry Hama corniness. The only returning castmember will be Channing Tatum, but who cares? Frankly, slavish devotion to re-casting the same actors seems unnecessary. Did anyone even care when Alec Baldwin was replaced by Harrison Ford and then by Ben Affleck? (In fact, I think the entire supporting cast of the Jack Ryan movies was replaced—except for James Earl Jones.) I would much rather, for example, see a new Spider-Man movie without Tobey but also without an origin than have to sit through another spider-bite. Or another Batman or Superman—or even Green Lantern–with new actors, rather than yet another origin story. But it’s even less important for GI Joe, because it’s truly an ensemble production reliant more on guns N action than actors N acting.

• THOR AND CAPTAIN AMERICA DVDs. To reward DVD buyers, two new short films about Agent Coulson will appear on the DVD releases. How short? Dunno. Why Agent Coulson? Again, dunno.

• R.E.D.2. That’s all I needed to hear. Can’t wait. The first R.E.D. was one of the most underrated comic book movies of recent years. I loved it to death.

• GREEN LANTERN KINDA SUCKED. And no sooner did it fail to live up to expectations—both on content and $$$–than Warner Bros began to distance itself from a sequel. Does this mean that at least Ryan will be free for Deadpool? Or does it mean Hollywood will be afraid of all superhero movies? If the latter, that’s just stupid. Bad movies come out all the time, it doesn’t mean that you kill an entire genre.

• R.I.P.D. It’s set for release in 2013, even though they haven’t confirmed the casting of Jodie Foster yet. Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges are already on board. Mignola’s Hellboy movies were terrific, so I have high hopes for Dark Hose handling this one well.

• INCREDIBLE HULK ON T.V. Guillermo Del Toro is still working with ABC and David “Battlestar Galactica” Eick on the show.

• SPY KIDS IN 4D. The main reason to report on this movie is because it’s what Robert Rodriguez is doing instead of a Deadpool movie. A secondary reason? Apparently the 4th dimension in movie-land is smell. That’s right, smell. The film is being shot in Aromascope.

• MARVEL ANIME. The anime “Iron Man” and “Wolverine” series–based on Warren Ellis comics—are slotted for late-July on G4. Check out the Wolverine trailer:

AND IN OTHER COMIC BOOK NEWS….

• SPIDER-NAM. No, that’s not a reprint. In an extremely odd—but visually stunning—experiment, Marvel is producing a James Stokoe project about Spider-Man going to Vietnam. In uniform. I mean, in Spider-Man uniform. Yes, it’s very odd. No, there’s no release date yet. But check it out—it’s amazing looking.

• BATMAN INC. #7. This issue sees the return of Man-of-Bats, the Native American Batman from Morrison’s much earlier Batman arc “The Black Glove,” which was basically about Batman trying to form his own Justice League with a bunch of Bat-types. Batman failed back then, but Batman, Inc., is his second, much-better-organized attempt. I love the way Morrison is tying it all together. And I can’t believe we have to wait a year for the conclusion in Batman: Leviathan.

• MARVEL UNIVERSE VS. WOLVERINE. Jonathan Mayberry and Goran Pavlov hit the ball out of the park—way, way out of the park—with last year’s Marvel Universe vs the Punisher. On June 29, Marvel and Mayberry launched a second series that will take place in the same horrible post-apocalyptic zombified universe. With art by another PunisherMax veteran, Laurence Campbell, this is pretty much a guarantee must-have-in-hardcover.

• FRANK MILLER’S HOLY TERROR. Legendary Comics (a new publishing arm of Legendary Films) will publish Frank Miller’s graphic novel on September 14, 2011. This kind of comic-books-designed-to-be-movies thing could be seen as pandering if the quality isn’t there. The project was originally designed to be a Batman book, in which the Dark Knight took on terrorists post-September 11, but it didn’t work for DC so Miller made it an original concept. It will be a black-and-white book.

And finally, last but not least, even the HuffPo recognizes that comics ain’t just for kids anymore.

As we approach the June 3 release date of X-Men First Class, the movie, it might be worth going over a few facts. First of all, the “First Class” of X-Men isn’t really the first class. Comic fans know that the first five were Beast, Cyclops, Marvel Girl (Phoenix/Jean Grey in the X-Men film trilogy), Iceman and Angel. The terrific X-Men First Class comic books, written by Jeff Parker, were about that team.

For the film, we’ll see a few faces that will be familiar to those who know X-Men only from the three films: the team will be led by a pre-doctorate Professor X, and will include Beast—who we will see both pre- and post-blue hair, Magneto, and Mystique. However, the roster will also include some pretty esoteric folks. Who, you ask?

Angel. Rather than use the Angel character from X3, the film picked out Grant Morrison’s insect-winged character, who also goes by the name “Tempest” because she can create ice/fire blasts. The weather powers won’t be part of the movie, as I understand it—she’ll just have her insect powers, which include regurgitating acid. She’s a pretty minor mutant in the X-world—I’m surprised she’s in the movie.

Azazel. Named after a “real” mythical demon, Azazel is Nightcrawler’s daddy. It’s not clear whether he’ll serve that role in the film, but since his powers are basically the same it will be hard to distance the character from the Nightcrawler character in the first trilogy (that actually takes place after XM:FC–like Star Wars). Plus, he’s got that pointy tail. Of course, Mystique is Nightcrawler’s mommy, so that whole thing might be hard to reconcile in this film. This is another pretty esoteric choice–although he’s somewhat more mainstream than Angel Salvadore by virtue of his progeny. It’s weird–were the film’s creators trying to reward nerds, or alienate audiences with a passing familiarity with X-Men? It’s very hard to tell why they chose these particular mutants….

Banshee. Banshee’s unfortunate “real name” is Sean Cassidy. But he first appeared way, way back in 1967, so it’s not like Roy Thomas got the name from the former Hardy Boy/teen heartthrob. His power is a sonic scream. Kinda like Black Canary, only he can fly and isn’t as easy on the eyes. In the film version, this may be adapted to be sonic blasts—it’s unclear that he’ll actually be screaming for the entire movie. That would, after all, be very annoying. Banshee is far and away the best known and most used of the lesser-knowns who make up the cast. Your girlfriend might even have heard of him.

Darwin. Darwin got his start in X-Men: Deadly Genesis—Ed Brubaker’s first major work for Marvel Comics—and has the ability to quickly adapt to any situation. It’s a tremendously cool power, and he’s been a great contributor to Peter David’s wonderfully underread and underrated X-Factor series. Darwin is the guy I’m personally most interested in seeing on the big screen.

Emma Frost. Known as the world’s hottest comic book character, Emma can turn diamond hard (and can make geeks hard, too) and has psychic powers. She’s also Scott “Cyclops” Summers’ girlfriend, at least in the comic books. Doubt they’ll include that little wrinkle in the movie, though.

Havoc. Cyclops’ bro. But apparently he won’t be a sibling in the movie. Anyway, he can shoot plasma blasts. That’s pretty much all you need to know.

Riptide. Riptide is a Chris Claremont/John Romita Jr. creation who is pretty similar to Red Tornado. He has wind power—but not break-wind power. That would be cool, wouldn’t it? Like Angel, Riptide’s not a major character in the comic books—I don’t know why they’re picking him over so many other, better-known and cooler options (like Madrox or Polaris or Dazzler or Longshot (now, that would have been awesome)).

Sebastian Shaw. Head of the Hellfire Club in the comics, he’s a huge guy who can absorb energy and throw it back at you. So if Hulk hits Shaw, Shaw hits back with the same force, basically.

There you have it! With this info, you should be able to impress any non-geeks you find at the theater. So, if it’s possible to get laid at a superhero movie, you’ve got a bit of a leg up. Thank me later.

The movie is coming on June 3.

‘Cause I’ll be watching movies for the whole summer . . . Here’s where you will find me . . .

MAY

May 6. Thor. Starting the season off right. But not the 3D version.
May 14. Hobo With A Shotgun. Rutger Hauer in some bloody B-Movie badass nonsense. In terms of titles, this is better than Snakes on a Plane. It’s released on May 6, but if it lasts a week, I’ll be here!
May 21. Priest. If the reviews aren’t horrible, I’ll see it in its second week of release.
May 27. Hangover 2.

Summary: One a weekend. That’s manageable.

JUNE

June 4. X-Men: First Class.
June 11. This Saturday, I’m staying in to watch Green Lantern: Emerald Nights on DVD. DC toons are pretty damn good.
June 12. The Chameleon. ‘Cause Sundays are a good time to see a reader, and this French film looks like it could be awesome. And I’m a guy who typically avoids French movies.
June 18. Super 8. No, I didn’t forget about it when it opened last Friday. I just didn’t want to fight the crowds last week.
June 19. Green Lantern. Looks like my kids’ll be seeing two movies this weekend.
June 25. If it’s still around, I might try to catch art-house flick Beautiful Boy, a drama about a Columbine-type shooting told from the p.o.v. of the parents of the shooter, or B-action/horror flick Trollhunter if it doesn’t get completely wrecked in the reviews.

Summary: Getting a little crowded, but even if miss a couple of these I’ll be fine.

JULY

July 2. Transformers 3. I can’t believe they scared Captain America off of Independence Day. Such a shame.
July 9. Horrible Bosses. Looks hilarious.
July 16. Salvation Boulevard. A former Deadhead/now ardent Christian tries to escape his followers. It’s directed by George Ratliff, who did a great doc called “Hell House” about an antiabortion haunted house program.
July 23. Captain America! If you even wondered about this, you’re nuts. My personal most anticipated movie of the summer.
July 30. Cowboys and Aliens. I won’t fight the lines on Friday night, but if there’s a 7AM show, I’m there.
July 31. The Guard. I just love Don Cheadle. Or, I may be taken to The Smurfs, depending on my boys’ level of interest.

Summary: Now it’s getting crowded. I also may want to see Another Earth, The Perfect Host, Beats, Rhymes & Life . . . Too much to see!

AUGUST

August 5. The Change-Up. Freaky Friday for grown-ups. Looks funny.
August 6. Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
August 12. 30 Minutes of Less. A black comedy that looks like it could be funny–by the director and one of the stars of Zombieland.
August 13. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. It’s Guillermo del Toro, for goodness sake.
August 20. I might see Fright Night, if the reviews are decent. But I can pretty much guarantee I’ll have zero interest in the Conan reboot.
August 26. Believe it or not, nothing. A free weekend! Maybe I’ll spend time with my family!
August 31. The Debt. Jews with guns! And one of them is Helen Mirren!

And then it’s nearly September, and time for “serious” movies. Except of course for the prequel to The Thing. I’ll be all over that.

Dudes–I’m sorry. Such regrets. I haven’t been good about keeping up with my news posts. Job has been off-the-hook busy. Anyhow, it’s been a long time, so some of this may be old news, but I’m sure you’ll find some surprises. After all, the Superman movie is getting cast fast-and-furious–and it looks like the hottest cougar in Hollywood will be playing his mom! Oh, and then of course there’s the new X-Men cartoon. That’s right.

Hit the break.

COMIC BOOK MOVIES!

SUPERMAN (BEGINS). Over the last month or so, we’ve heard that Viggo Mortensen may play General Zod (why is he back—are there no other good Superman villains?), and Kevin Costner and (the incredibly hot) Diane Lane as Ma and Pa Kent (but not in that order). I hate to say this, but I have nothing but low expectations on this one.

THE PUNISHER. Ray Stevenson (who will play Volstagg in Thor in a few months) is in talks to do a sequel to the godawful Punisher: War Zone. >Heavy sigh.< I’d heard there might be an HBO show on Punisher. That would be a much better idea. Garth Ennis has already provided all the scripts and storyboards they need….And if they’re gonna go for another big pic, I must admit that the Thomas Jane version wasn’t all that bad. It was certainly better than Superman Returns (shudder!).

THE AVENGERS. According to the casting call, we’re gonna see the Loki story and Kree/Skrull war. Could be intentionally misleading. Could be overly ambitious. Could be awe-freakin-some.

BLADE RUNNER. A prequel is being developed, with none of the original creators. Damn shame. BR is probably one of the top 10 movies of all time. Now they’re gonna ruin it

COMIC BOOK T.V. SHOWS!

X-MEN ANIME. First off, when the hell do I get to see this?!?

17TH PRECINCT. This one wasn’t even on my radar, but the creator of probably the best Sci Fi TV show of all time (Battlestar Galactica) is working on the
pilot for a supernatural cop show. Don’t know if it will be for a major network or a cable station.

POWERS. For a while now, FX has been considering a project based on Brian Michael Bendis’ creator-owned series. Well, it’s been greenlit, and it may star Katee “Starbuck” Sackhoff. Y’all probably know this already, but the series is about two cops who investigate super-hero homicides.

COMIC BOOK COMIC BOOKS!

VENOM. Yeah, Rick Remender and Tony Moore were the contraversial team behind Frankencastle–which offended Punisher fans but thrilled fans of real comic books–like me–who want unpredictability, mayhem, and crazy, balls-out fun. But this new book, which basically Venom as James Bond, is way better. At least so far. I mean, based on the concept, the prequel issues by Dan Slott, and this first issue by the Remender/Moore team. The art is fantastic, the script sows the seeds of mad potential to be as great as Sinister Spider-Man was (and if you didn’t read that, you missed all kinds of animals being thrown at Venom and Venom eating all kinds of badguys–a truly amazing, overlooked classic). I’m really looking forward to the next one.

MARVEL UNIVERSE VS. WOLVERINE. Did you read Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher, a 2010 mini that’s now out in hardcover, written by Jonathan Maberry and illustrated by PunisherMax artist Goran Parlov? Well, then shame on you. You missed the best Marvel Zombie type apocalyptic tale in years–and the best use of Deadpool, too. Go buy it. Or, if you’re waiting for paperback, check out Mayberry’s latest–also with a PunisherMax artist (this time it’s Laurence Campbell)–Marvel Universe Vs. Wolverine. I can pretty much guarantee this will be awesome.

THE STATE OF THE BATMAN. No, not the movie, which is getting way too much press for a movie that is still at the script stage. The comic(s). I’ll close on this: All last year, I told you over and over and over that Grant Morrison’s Batman & Robin was the best Batbook since . . . Well, probably, ever. Well, that’s over. Batman is back. So, what’s it like now? There are still way too many Batman/Gotham books, but a few are well worth your time and money. Ironically, B&R itself has become more—not less—incomprehensible since Morrison left the title, and it is the worst of the books with Batman in the actual title. The art chores are a moving target, some good some bad, but the writing and storylines are dull. Morrison’s new book, Batman, Inc., is on the other hand quite awesome. The main Batman book, still written by Tony Daniel, continues to be a solid superhero book. If you dig capes and/or The Bat, this is a book you’ll dig. But it won’t change your life. And Detective Comics? Scott Snyder is killing it. I’d hoped Jock would stay as the artist, but when they replace him with Francesco Francavilla, I can’t complain a bit. The other new Batbook is Batman: The Dark Knight, which I’m a little disappointed in—but I had very high expectations, so I’m willing to come down a little and stick it out for the first arc. The art is incredible, but the stories haven’t caught me yet. Also in the Batverse: Batgirl, Birds of Prey, The Outsiders, Knight and Squire, Red Robin, Batman: Brave and the Bold (for kids only), Streets of Gotham. Way too many to read or care about, and some of which are being cancelled as we speak. So, in sum, there are three regular batbooks worth reading: Batman, Batman Inc., and Detective. Oh, and there’s Batwoman, which has been great in the past but never seems to come out on schedule. So: Go add Detective and Batman Inc. to your pull list, and if you’re a big fan, cop Dark Knight and Batman, too.

Howard Stern?! Really?! Yes! Hit the break! But in the meantime, check out this amazing cover for this year’s Marvel event, “Fear Itself.”

This week, let’s start with news about . . .

COMICS!

SALES FIGS FOR ’10. One of my favorite sites, CBR posted its roundup of annual sales with the lead: “2010 was both a good year and a bad year for comic book sales.” It’s a fascinating article if you’re a total nerd (guilty!), and in it they describe how Marvel and DC are able to offer alternate covers—but only to retailers who order a certain number of books—thus inflating their sales, but doing so artificially and at the expense of retailers who are left with unsold, and unreturnable, copies of the issue that they ordered solely to qualify for the alternate cover. Also, although Marvel/DC superheroes dominated (exclusively) the top 400 single-issue sales, with books like Avengers, X-Men, Blackest Night/Brightest Day and the Batstuff (no surprises so far), the opposite was true in the trade arena. The only Marvel/DC book to crack the top 10 was DC’s original graphic novel, “Superman: Earth One.” The rest was all Walking Dead, Scott Pilgrim and Kick Ass (which is on a Marvel imprint, but is creator-owned). In other words: Movies and TV move trades of indie books, but not Marvel/DC books. (No Iron Man, no Avengers, no Batman). In fact, the only other Marvel/DC superhero book to crack the top 25 was Blackest Night, which had no movie/TV tie in at all. We’ll see what happens this year, with major films about Green Lantern, X-Men, Captain America and Thor all slated to hit mid-year.

THE AMAZING FANTASTIC FOUR. Spider-Man will replace Johnny Storm–who is dead but probably not really (see this hilarious page, e.g.). Ugh. I know it’s temporary (despite this *hilarious* theory otherwise), but I’ve seen the new costumes (pictured at right) and that’s what I have to say: Ugh.

MATT FRACTION AND OLIVER COIPEL ON THOR. Oliver Copiel is one of the best artists around, and Matt Fraction is (at times) one of the best writers. I haven’t read his Thor stuff yet—it’s on my shelf—but since he has a big hammer, I’m hoping it will be closer to Matt’s quality Iron work (Fist and Man) and far removed from his surprisingly dull team-based books (X-Men). Anyway, they’ve announced a new, out-of-continuity Thor title to be released in April. I wonder why they’re doing a self-contained series on Thor in April? Hmmmm. Anyway, it won’t be an adaptation of the movie, but clearly it’s designed to capitalize on it. Rumor is: Thor fights Galactus.

Secret Six #30. If you’re not reading Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore’s masterpiece, you’re missing Bane going on his first date of his life . . . With a hot stripper. That’s right: BANE DATES A STRIPPER. This is the book Ellis promised us when he started Thunderbolts, but left too soon to deliver. It’s about bad guys trying to be good but being unable to be good because, well, they’re bad. It’s brilliant and hilarious. Seriously. Go scoop up the trades. Now.

AVENGERS ACADEMY GIANT-SIZE #1. If you’re not reading Avengers Academy, you’re missing out on what is probably the best of the Avengers books right now. Paul Tobin (writer) and David Baldeon (pencils) had created an Avengers Academy/Spider-Girl/Young Allies vs. Arcade three-issue arc (the regular writer of the title is Cristos Gage), which Marvel seemed to have no place for. Turns out, it’ll be not an annual but an $8 “giant size” book. I haven’t shelled out
for any of these “big” books in the past because they’ve been collections of shorter stories grouped with reprints, and I haven’t felt the need. But for this one I might—especially since I’m not sure how they’d ever release it in trade.

HOWARD STERN. True confession: Howard Stern is my father. Or he might as well be. I’ve listened to every hour of every show (and that’s actually close to
non-exaggeration) since 1985, which cumulatively means I’ve probably spent more time with him than my father, mommy, wife and kids combined. And now my favorite person to listen to is coming to my favorite medium: The man with a face for radio will have a bio-comic fromBluewater Productions titled “Orbit: Howard Stern.” Says Howard (who does not endorse the product): “Nobody wants to buy that.”

ZOMBIES. Trying to capitalize on all the zombieness, publisher IDW is infesting its titles (G.I. Joe, Transformers, Star Trek, and Ghostbusters) with the undead this week. Will that actually make anyone buy their books? And speaking of GI Joe, it can’t possibly be a coincidence that GI Joe Cobra #12 looks like another very famous #12, can it?

FLICKS!

THE AVENGERS. Soon after Samuel Jackson leaked that there’s going to be a female sidekick for Nick Fury, the studio confirmed that Cobie “How I Met Your
Mother” Smulders is cast as Maria Hill. Jackson has also said he’s got appearances in Thor and Captain America, but the scenes aren’t shot yet. I truly hope they don’t make it one of several alternate post-credits scenes—because when they did that for Wolverine I got the boring one in the bar, not the one with Deadpool, and man was I pissed. Oh. And there’s also a new rumor that Ms. Marvel might be in the movie after all, but I think that’s pretty specious. Joss Whedon has confirmed again and again that Wasp will be the only Avengerchick.

THOR AND CAP. Yeah, the Superbowl trailers have been seen by all. Thor was a bit of a let down really, since we had pretty much seen it all in prior trailers. Cap showed us a bit more–Chris Evans’ head on little bitty Stevie, Cap swimming, Dum Dum Dugan and Union Jack. That was cool.

Meanwhile, Bucky pix have leaked to the web . . .

WOLVERINE. See, now I enjoyed the first Wolverine movie, but according to Hugh Jackman, director Darren Aronfosky told him to get bigger for the next one, saying that he was too long and tall—which is the opposite of Wolverine. It’s a good sign that Darren seems to understand the character from a comic-fan point of view.

R.I.P.D. Rumors circulate of a film version of this Hellboy spinoff with Ryan Reynolds (which would mean no Deadpool film of course) and Zack Galifianakis.

BLACK PANTHER. Documentary-maker Mark Bailey (“Ghosts of Abu Ghraib”) has been hired by Marvel Studios to write a screenplay. Obviously, we’re still a long
way away from anything actually developing.

V.I.C.E. The Top Cow comic has been picked up for development into a feature film.

IDIOT BOXING!

WONDER WOMAN. No sooner did David E. Kelley announce that the pilot was too expensive for TV than NBC picked the show up, and then started juggling it like a hot potato. Feminists are still sore about Ally McBeal, expecting the show will be an anti-woman T&A fest. (Frankly, I never thought Ally McBeal was antifeminist, but what do I know? I’m just a man.) Comic fans are concerned, too, because the titular heroine is being touted as “reimagined” as a vigilante crime fighter in Los Angeles. Basically, the origin is the same: Steve Trevor lands on Paradise Island and for some unfathomable reason leaves the place where he’s the only guy among hundreds of chicks who all look like Linda Carter, takes Diana with him, but the show starts after they’ve broken up and she’s on her own. This could be a tired one-joke show about how this perfect chick doesn’t need men and doesn’t understand how to work a Blackberry. It doesn’t look good folks.

THE CAPE. Anybody still watching it? Because they’ve already shortened the season from 12 to 10 eps. Cancellation can’t be far behind. I’ve been hanging in with it, but I have to say: It’s not very good.
