WHISKEYTOWN 1995!

I don’t know about you all, but I think that mid-90s Whiskeytown was Ryan Adams at his best.  The band’s line up was Ryan, Caitlin Cary, Phil Wandscher, Steve Grothmann, and Skillet Gilmore–all exceedingly talented–and Ryan didn’t shy away from the country side of alt-country.  This show was special for those reasons, and for the many covers–from Richard Hell to The Byrds to a Chris Isaak song that isn’t “Wicked Game.”  Not to mention the Staple Sisters.

Get ready for one of the best Ryan Adams boots you’ve ever heard.  These are December 2000 outtakes from the Demolition album, and represent the first(?) Pink Heart sessions.  You’ve got the dopey Red Hot Chili Peppers improv, but there’s also a great Ramonesy tune (“I Don’t Wanna Work”), hot instrumentals, and a sweet version of Red Red Red Red Wine.  All tracks are awesome quality, and this is a must have for any Ryan fan.

Rachel Yamagata is a singer-songwriter/pianist from Arlington, Virginia (where I currently call home). Here’s a show where she teamed up with another, slightly better known singer/songwriter/pianist. A lad named Ryan Adams. Only Ryan’s on drums(!) Interesting for the novelty, but worth getting for the songs. Yamagata’s work is top notch.
